PM-KISAN Farmers Scheme

Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of India’s rural economy, and small farmers often face financial challenges due to fluctuating crop prices, high input costs, and unpredictable weather. To provide them with consistent income support, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme in 2019. This initiative offers direct cash benefits to eligible farmers, helping them manage agricultural expenses and household needs.

What is PM-KISAN?

PM-KISAN is a 100% centrally funded scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to small and marginal farmers across India. Under this program, eligible farmer families receive ₹6,000 annually, paid in three equal installments of ₹2,000 directly into their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for PM-KISAN, a farmer must:

  • Own cultivable land as per state/UT land records.
  • Belong to a small or marginal farmer family (combined landholding of up to 2 hectares).
  • Have a valid Aadhaar-linked bank account.

Not eligible are:

  • Institutional landholders.
  • Government employees (except Class IV/multi-tasking staff).
  • Professionals like doctors, engineers, lawyers, and income taxpayers.

How the Scheme Works: A Real Example

Take the case of Ramesh Kumar, a marginal farmer from Uttar Pradesh owning 1.5 hectares of land. Before PM-KISAN, he relied solely on seasonal crop sales, often taking loans for seeds and fertilizers. After enrolling, the ₹2,000 quarterly installment allowed him to purchase better seeds without borrowing, reducing his debt burden.

Benefits of PM-KISAN

  • Timely Financial Support: Helps farmers manage sowing and harvesting expenses.
  • Direct Transfer: Eliminates middlemen, ensuring the full amount reaches beneficiaries.
  • Nationwide Reach: Covers over 11 crore farmers across India.
  • Support for All Seasons: Can be used for crop inputs, livestock care, or household needs.
